FAQ
Retail FAQ
Do you buy and sell used firearms?
Yes, we love to buy and sell used handguns and long guns. We specialize in the purchase of estate firearms/antique firearms and militaria. We will come to you. Our company is licensed as a secondhand dealer in firearms and has excellent working relationships with local law enforcement property bureaus. We also accept trade-ins when purchasing new firearms and other store items. We have an extensive inventory of pre-owned firearms and accessories.
Do you take pistols and rifles on consignment?
Yes, a consignment gun is a gun that our shop will sell on behalf of another individual. A person may not want to deal with the process of selling a firearm for a multitude of reasons. They then bring the gun to us, and we put it up for sale with our inventory or can list it online. The benefit of Baits & Barrels selling your firearm enables the seller to have a better chance of getting their gun sold for a higher price than if they sell it on their own. However, since we are doing the leg work for you (photographing, listing, auctioning and collecting payment), you pay a fee, generally in the form of a percentage of the sale price rather than an upfront cost. Consigner fees vary depending on the type of firearm and its value.
Do you special order firearms?
Yes. If we don’t have the item you’re looking for, we will be happy to order it.
Some special orders will require payment in full if it is not a standard store inventory item or a deposit. Please email us for more information.
Do you purchase entire firearm collections and estates that are comprised of firearms?
Absolutely, we specialize in purchasing large collections, used guns, militaria, antiques, and curios and relics. Our staff can appraise the items and make a cash offer on the spot. Baits & Barrels is licensed to engage in the sale of secondhand items. In certain circumstances, we can come to you and evaluate the firearms left behind by a spouse or other family member. We offer this service in conjunction with all the federal, state, and county regulations and will provide identification upon our arrival.
How do I purchase a handgun with a NY State pistol license?

Range FAQ
How do range reservations work?
Each customer may reserve the range for a specific time slot. Range reservations are subject to availability. The time slots must be paid for in advance, and in the event that the session must be cancelled, the fee is not refundable. Remember, if you booked the range, someone else couldn’t, and if you get stuck in traffic and miss your time slot, we suffer the consequences along with the other customers who have their own lives and schedules to adhere to. Moral of the story: take the transaction seriously and be on time and ready to learn.
How do I book a range session?
Scheduling your range session is fast and easy! Simply give us a call at 631-740-9004 and we will book your appointment no problem!
For all range sessions we are now requiring a $50 booking fee at the time of scheduling your range appointment. This payment goes toward the range session which costs $150/hour. At the time of the appointment you are required to pay the remaining balance of $100 for your session.
Clients must provide a minimum of 72 hours notice to cancel or reschedule a range session. If you cancel/reschedule within 72 hours you will receive a $50 credit toward your next range session.
If a client cancels or does not show up for a session with less than 72 hours notice, the session will be considered a “late cancel” or a “no show” and the client will not be reimbursed or credited the $50 booking fee.
Unfortunately this policy has become necessary to do recent cancellations and is put into effect as a courtesy to our range instructors, whose time is valuable. Every cancellation creates a financial lose to our valued instructors. Lastly, last minute cancellations and no shows take away range time from other customers who are interested in booking their own range sessions.
What type of Range is it?

Law Changes FAQ
Law Changes
Attention New York State customers: Effective September 13th, 2023, All Background Checks on ammo & firearms will no longer be processed by the FBI NICS system.
ALL dealers have been officially notified that:
- Pursuant to Executive Law § 228, New York has been designated a Point of Contact state for the purpose of processing National Instant Background Check (“NICS”) transactions.
TRANSLATION: Commencing on September 13, 2023, all background check requests for firearms, including rifles, shotguns, and ammunition purchases, will be submitted to the New York State Police. FFL & NYS Dealers will no longer submit requests directly to FBI NICS.
New York State Police
NYS NICS Unit
This is a new and unpredictable that will affect firearm, rifle, shotgun, and ammunition purchases in New York. We have received official notification that New York has been designated as a Point of Contact state, in accordance with Executive Law § 228, for processing National Instant Background Check (“NICS”) transactions.
Starting September 13, 2023, the background check requests for firearms, rifles, shotguns, and ammunition purchases will now be directed to the New York State Police instead of the long-standing process performed by the FBI NICS section. Fees paid directly to New York State: AMMUNITION: $2.50 – FIREARMS: $9.50 per transaction *
While we are eager to ensure a seamless transition, we anticipate some uncertainties in the initial stages of this new system. We are currently enrolled and registered with NYS for access to the system, although we currently lack firsthand experience of its operation. On 9-13-2023, dealers are required to submit payment for the processing fee associated with each background check immediately to NYS.gov.
For those purchasing firearms, the procedure for background checks will remain consistent with the familiar forms customers have been using. There is a slight change in the process when it comes to ammunition purchases. Customers will no longer be required to complete a form; dealers will be responsible for submitting customer information to the state for approval before each daily transaction, not per box or per round of Ammo.
Dealers will need to submit the customer’s driver’s license details, as well as specific details about the ammunition being purchased, such as the quantity, caliber, manufacturer’s name, and, if applicable, the serial number to the NYS police portal.
We understand these changes may raise questions, and we are committed to providing you with the most accurate information through our website and social media accounts. Please subscribe to our mailing list and social media accounts for the latest information.
Thank you for your continued trust and support.
